Simply Retro challenge… Month 1

I forgot to tell you about a little quilting challenge that I am undertaking, along with my good friend Sharon. She has just posted her update, so I’m adding mine to the pool. Anyone is welcome to join in, for one month or all 12. The rules are quite simple…. we pick a quilt pattern from the amazing book, Simply Retro by Camille Roskelley. Then we make up the quilt! A finished top is all you need, and the idea is to mix it up – make the pattern your way, in your style and colours. And Sharon and I have certainly approached this pattern from pretty different perspectives!

As you can see, the fabric that Camille originally used is pretty lush, with ornate florals and fairly strong colours. All set off with white backgrounds and soft neutral sashing. I thought, what else could I do with this? Working with the fabric I had on hand, because 9 fat quarters was out of the budget this month, I came up with this….

Using the amazing Full Moon Lagoon line from Mo Bedell…. I actually bought this fabric for another quilt, which is still in production stages. But I had enough fabric left over to make into this pattern, and just wow!! The jury is still out as to whether I sash or not…. my instinct says no, because I love the way the colours intersect…. but I will wait until I have finished the last 2 blocks before I decide. I’m only making this 3×3 blocks, as at 18″ square, they will make a decent sized quilt for quilting on my machine at home.

As I have been sewing along, I have been putting in an extra seam on all the triangles, pressing and trimming, and I have this pretty little stack of Half Square Triangles, just ready to be made into something wonderful!

Next month, I get to choose the challenge quilt, which looks like being the Playground pattern. Stay tuned for a quilty finish, and the start of another re-mix!

And of course, I’m always kept company by my faithful puppy sidekick…. I just had to add this photo in because she looks so wonderful… After a rather naughty morning playing in the garden and barking at the chickens, she got incredibly filthy and had to have an urgent bath. Fully combed and fresh, it was time for a nap on the lounge. Ah Coco, our lives are never going to be the same again, and in all the best ways.
