Owl bag for Fiona

It’s amazing how you come across different people, in places you wouldn’t expect and they make a huge impact on your life. I’m no stranger to online-friendships, Sharon being a case in point, however the bond that I have formed with Fiona through Instagram has been fast and become really special to both of us. So when I came across the pattern for the Sew Together Bag, I knew I had to make it for her. Fionaย is more of a traditional quilter. She loves applique, embroidery and all things embellishment. What better place for her to keep her current project handy and organised!

Although her true love happens to be lions, we both love owls, so I quilted up some Owl home decor weight fabric for the bag outer. Seaming it at the bottom allowed me to keep both sides going the right way, although I winced every time I had to chop into one of these cute little owls. I did enjoy my first try at loopy heart Free Motion Quilting, and tried to put a heart over every owl that I could find. Please don’t point out that they look more like leaves than hearts ROFL. I tried.

The interior is completed with 3 zippered compartments and 4 loose ones. A piece of felt is sewn into one end for a needle catcher. Everything zips up tight with the outer zip, and the sewn down ends double as handles. It’s amazing how much one of these bags can hold! I made a test run one before cutting into the nice fabric, and it actually holds my current sock knitting project, needles, balls of wool, first finished sock and all!

I couldn’t have managed this without the sew-along tutorial over at the Quilt Barn. Some steps were a little tricky, but I’m over the moon at the quality of the finish on this one. Fiona felt the same way when it arrived, stuffed full of treats and treasures last week. It was a quick, meaningful present that is practical as well, and I can’t wait to make another one!!
