March quilting book reviews – Precuts and Modern designs

I love finding new books to share with you every month. It’s always so fun to get these books from the library and see what treasures are hidden within. I have two books for you this month.

Book reviews - Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts : Modern Designs for Classic Quilts

Layer Cake, Jelly Roll & Charm Quilts by Pam and Nicky Lintott, and Modern Designs for Classic Quilts by Kelly Biscopink and Andrea Johnson.

Starting with the first book, which I know has been around a long time now – published in 2009. However I was surprised that a few quilts inside it did have a fresh modern feel.

Some quilts were definitely the wrong choice for the pattern. The following is a classic example – in some of the blocks you can’t actually see the design between the two fabrics included!

For some, but not all of the patterns, they included samples in two different colourways or styles. I love when designers do that!

All the quilts included have detailed yardage requirements making it easy to see if the jelly roll you have carefully hoarded in your stash will work for a particular design, or if you should have bought two when you had the chance!

All up it’s a classic book with easy to follow directions for the most part. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, I would say that it was nothing spectacular in current terms, but a good solid reference book for these ever popular precut fabric packs.

The second book, Modern Designs for Classic Quilts by Kelly Biscopink and Andrea Johnson was one I had hoped to get for some time. I love the impact of the cover log cabin quilt. Throughout the book, all the photographs are immaculately styled. It made me want to move in right away!

All of the projects in the book had a quilt and a mini-project – cushion cover etc, so you could practice the skills without committing to a large project immediately.

Beautiful hexagon quilt, or a simpler hexagon cushion project. I love the thick multi coloured quilting lines around this cushion applique.

Here we see side by side the option to make a rainbow coloured Dresden quilt, or a simpler Cushion in an offset design.

If you were looking for a solid platform for learning quilting techniques, but wanted the modern inspiration, this book is definitely worth looking at. I wouldn’t buy it simply because none of the techniques were new to me, but I loved all the colourful eye candy throughout.

I do hope that you have found this little flip through some more books valuable. If there are any books that you would specifically like to see, please let me know in the comments and I will try to get hold of them!
