My #aussiehoopswap Vintage Creation

Hoop art. It’s the new hot thing. Love it or hate it, it can’t be avoided at the moment. I happen to love my hoop art – it’s the perfect way to show off some cute fabric or embroidery, and they fit beautifully onto my Blind of Awesome.

When the #aussiehoopswap was organised on Instagram, I couldn’t resist joining in. My partner made two fantastic mosaics of hoops for inspiration and I really loved working on this. She received it over in Western Australia last night, so I can show off what I made for her.

It was all made from vintage fabric and a vintage doily that had marks on the other part, so it was an ideal candidate to chop up!

Firstly I ironed light interfacing onto the back of the stripe fabric to help stabilise it and avoid distorting the stripes when stitched or stretched into the hoop. I picked thread colours from the beautiful stitching to make my words, and printed up words on the computer, tracing it off on my light box using a Frixion pen to mark them out. I used superfine Bottom Line thread in a soft ivory colour to stitch the doily on to the fabric along the fabric edge, leaving the lovely textural crochet edge loose.

A simple premade label on the back, glued into place.

Included in her parcel were matching pincushion bucket – oh so cute!! and a key fob/wristlet strap that I made out of the same vintage fabric and a fabulous piece of vintage crochet lace from my stash. Again I used the strong fine Bottom Line thread to run two lines of stitching along the lace to hold it securely without the stitching being too obvious and spoiling the effect.

All wrapped up in some pretty tissue paper with bakers twine and a doily for decoration! Anne totally loved it, and I did enjoy trying some new techniques that I hadn’t really used much before. I can see a lot of these vintage creations in my future!

I’d love to hear from you – Hoop Art. Love it? Hate it? Do you have any hanging up in your sewing space?

Happy Crafting - Cassie.

I had so much fun making them, and I think it shows in the final product. I have more and more ideas for these, expect to see some more!
