Quick sew quilt top – Bluebird Park

Sometimes you just get the urge to sew something quick. Something that is easy pieced, lots of straight seams and not too small and fiddly. Maybe you’re on a tight deadline for a gift, maybe you are a bit burned out from too much intricate piecing. Whatever it is, I have the cure for you!

This gorgeous pattern, Fox River from Beyond Neutral by John Q. Adams. I do love this book. It’s fresh, not too complicated, and John loves letting the prints do the talking instead of the piecing.

I combined this simple square pattern with a stack of Bluebird Park layer cake pieces that I showcased in my Stash Review. Added in some extra fabric from Autumn Woods, mixed in a neutral greige. Stir lightly and within a couple of days this….

While I was putting this beautiful quilt top together, I was contemplating it’s future life. I have the perfect person to give it to, now I can’t wait to get it quilted!

I did find this awesome vintage sheet for the backing, however when going through my stash, I found an even better match. I can’t wait to share the finished quilt!

What’s your quilt gifting process? I haven’t given many away, I’d love some ideas on washing instructions, parcelling, and even how you choose who gets a particular quilt?

Oh Cassie this is gorgeous!! I’ve only ever kept one quilt that I made which was my first one that I made. I signed up for a quilt class for some mental health . We made a sampler quilt with a large appliqué center. I made the top over a winter and then my husband had it quilted for me as my anniversary gift.

It looks fabulous…I love a quick quilt when a clever twist. This really lets the fabric do the work.

It’s beautiful! I love how it looks through the light – almost like pojagi. I haven’t gifted many quilts to non-immediate family (just 4 so far) but when I do I try to make a label either embroidered or written with a micron pen and then I roll it up and wrap it in a ribbon. I haven’t yet pre-washed one! Coming up with a plan is the hardest for me because I try to match the style and color to the recipient (or parents of the recipient if a baby quilt). Maybe that’s thinking too much because I’m making them prospectively and not giving retrospectively.

I think its wonderful that you put so much thought into the recipient. It makes a quilt more likely to be treasured if it’s in their style and not just the makers taste.

I love this quilt, and wanted to know if you could tell me how much of the Bluebird Park fabric you need to do it. Thanks!!

Thankyou so much Kate! I can’t give an exact figure as I used a mixture of a partial layer cake and some 25cm x WOF strips from two different sources. According to the book you require 16 assorted print fat quarters. If you want to make it the size recommended, which is about 8 blocks by 8 blocks, you would need 64 layer cake squares or 1 layer cake and some assorted yardage. Of course, you could make less blocks if you wanted 🙂 Hope this helps!
