June quilting book review – Quilter’s Mixology

I have a wonderful book to share with you today. Lately I am being progressively drawn to curved piecing. I haven’t tried it yet, but I love the look that it gives a quilt, and the wonderful patterns you can create. The icing on the cake was this book – A Quilter’s Mixology: Shaking Up Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel.

All of the projects are based on the traditional Drunkard’s Path block, however there is very little traditional about them! Angela combined curves in new ways, mixing them up with lush colours and a bit of fun. I want to make all the quilts in this book!

If you are a little nervous of curves, Angela has a great section on different ways to sew them, and how to rescue them when things don’t turn out quite right.

Maybe a simple, small project. Just to dip your toes in the water?

Or you could go bright and bold and scrappy with this beautiful curvy nine-patch quilt. There is so much possibility with the secondary patterns that these blocks create.

I have an order for a quilt along these fabulous drippy lines for the eldest teenager in the family. He’s very hard to please, so I was excited to see how many of the quilts in this book appealed to him. That’s got to be a great feature in any pattern book!

Angela also included many photos of the fabulous quilting that was executed on her quilt designs. It is a nice way to include the quilter, who added a whole new layer of texture and form to the quilts. This is the work of the ultra-talented Krista Withers. Her work is definitely worth a look if you are after some free motion quilting inspiration.

The final verdict? As you can probably guess, this book is a YES for me. Just looking at the pictures gets me inspired to sew, and I have barely shown you any of the book. Curved piecing never looked so exciting!

Are you a curved piecing fan? Love it? Hate it? Or are you like me and still nervous to try it?

The projects look fun! I love curved piecing – I made a retro flowers quilt. I want to make another but I’m hesitant only because there were just so many scraps from the cutting. Thanks for the peek into the book!

Agnes, I must admit that it does look a little wasteful. I will have to get creative with some ideas for using up all the scraps!
