Farmer’s Wife 1930’s – Patience, Patricia and Grandma

Aren’t all the blocks in this sew along whizzing past! Are you having any trouble keeping up? I know I will be very glad for the break coming up in December, a chance to lay out and admire my blocks and catch my breath.

In case you missed it earlier, my official blogger tutorial for Patience was posted on Wednesday, but here she is again because I think she’s just so cute! Did you like my little 9 patch video I created? Patience has brought along a few friends too.

Find Angie’s Tutorial for Patience HERE, and my tutorial HERE.

Also released on Tuesday, and in the same 9 patch family as Patience is her sister, Patricia. I had the urge to make her in bright sunshine colours, and I think the contrast came out well!

If you missed them Angie’s tutorial for Patricia is HERE, and the official blogger, Anita of Daydreams of Quilts has her tutorial HERE.

Patricia was nice and easy to piece, and by pressing the seams in opposite directions I was easily able to nest the corners of the centre square which gives me nice sharp points. Love it! Of course I used the fabulous Marti Michell templates to cut the pieces out – using a square to cut the strip sets up made things go together so fast!

Following on from these two sweet girls was block 39, Grandma. Now this is one of those blocks that looks all sweet, like an innocent old lady. But she has false teeth, a hearing aid, and never has lollies, only cough drops.

It’s probably not as obvious from the first photo, but I put Grandma together in 6 diagonal rows instead of the way that Angie built her block HERE. Anita’s tutorial HERE, and Lisa from In the Boon Docks HERE are very useful. Lisa uses paper piecing for her block.

Looking at the rear view of this block, my problem becomes apparent. The block has assumed more of a diamond shape/lean instead of a square. I blame it on the 30 triangles and what felt like 3 million bias edges that we had to deal with. It was the block that nearly broke me. The final seam took 4 tries, I unpicked it so much that it actually started to fray and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to salvage it at all. Not a fun block – the best part of the whole thing are the cute little puppies.

So, how did you fare in your farming this week? Did you love sweet little Patience and Patricia? Did Grandma give you trouble, or was I the only one!

**Disclaimer** I received the Marti Michell templates as part of my official participation in the sew along. All opinions of them are my own.
