Antique Ribbon Tablerunner – a Fat Quarter Shop project

Antique Ribbon Tablerunner - Cassandra Madge

I was so excited to be asked to join in with the Fat Quarter Shop bloghop launching the Antique Ribbon Tablerunner. When I first saw the pattern I was a bit nervous, but it was SUCH a simple and quick project to make up, I think choosing the fabric to use took the longest time of all.

Lucky for you, the Fat Quarter Shop has taken the hard work out of that, and has created a kit with everything you need to make their beautiful version of the Antique Ribbon Tablerunner. If you would like to put your own spin on the pattern, as I have, you can get the pattern on it’s own HERE. Make sure you check out the matching Video when you are making your Tablerunner!

As you can see, I ended up choosing the most gorgeous Hazel layercake. Hazel is the brand new line from Windham Fabrics designer and also awesome pattern designer, Cluck Cluck Sew. The florals in this fabric are just fabulous!  The pattern uses charm squares, however layer cakes are just 4 charm squares together so it was easy to convert the requirements. I did make sure with the directional prints of stripes and triangles to turn half of the fabric pieces and cut the stripes horizontally as well as vertically.

I do love my little bucket of strips ready to sew.

I adapted the pattern to fit my precious piece of Lotta Jansdotter which was a width of fabric cut, so my strip sets were approximately 42″ long.

My one addition to the pattern was a line of stay-stitching along the edge of each strip set before I tore the paper off. This helped secure the edge from stretching.

The finished runner, with a beautiful open starry flower quilting pattern, and double batting. I did find that the outer borders were still prone to stretching and fullness, so I chose the double batting to help tame all those pieces. Quilted up in no time on my Handi Quilter Avante, however it would also be an ideal project to free motion quilt on your domestic sewing machine.

I am so happy with how the grey Lotta print worked with the fabrics in Hazel!

As I had fabric strips left over, I snuck pieces of them and toning solids, into the binding strips at random intervals. I love the little pops of unexpected pattern and colour.

I love it! I must get this Hazel line! The little pops in the binding is the greatest idea I’ve seen in a long time. Great job Cassandra!

Hi Anita – yes Hazel is a fabulous line, grab it while you can. I’ve never done a scrappy binding before, this was a little stretch for me, but lots of fun too. Thanks so much for commenting 🙂

Lovely Cassie – so bright and happy even a tad Christmassy. Well done.
