Cassie’s La Passacaglia – third update

It’s been a few weeks since I posted an update on my La Passacaglia quilt update. Things move quickly for some parts of this English Paper Piecing project, but when it comes to the endless stars and the large rosettes they start to slow down considerably. However there is progress to report, including the finished first large rosette, a second large rosette completely finished, and I actually missed a smaller one in my last update. Plus a purple cog which I think is my favourite one so far.

It’s hard to get an appreciation for the scale of these things without seeing them up close, but these large rosettes are huge! I stuck with the floral outside rows, I really love the authentic Millefiori look that they give the designs, of flowers within flowers.

It’s pretty awesome being able to see how they will start to link in together. It seems strange leaving gaps and unfinished edges until you start lining them up.

Really love this purple cog. The centre flower from diamonds is from an old Anna Maria Horner fabric, and the stripe pentagons surrounding it are from Australian fabric designer, Emma Jean Jansen.

This pink and yellow rosette is the one I overlooked in my last update. I had fun making all the dandelion type flowers line up in the pentagon round. It was a quick one to sew, as it only had four stars.

Staying with the gold theme, here is my latest finish – I’m calling it millefiori sunflower! Starting with the bees in the centre, and working all the way out to the golden yellow outer row. Only as I look at it now, from a distance, can I see a fantastic secondary pattern due to the fussy cutting of the yellow and white “flower” pentagon circle. It almost seems like a striped ribbon folded and woven around each bird centre.

Fussy cutting many of these pieces certainly seems to be an addiction! The bees would have to be my proudest achievement though.

As this is a very special project, I have started to fill my completed rosettes in on the overview sheet from the book. It will help me to see where they can go, and check things like colour balance. For starters, I think I might be done with the gold!

So here we are, 7 rosettes including 2 of the 4 big ones done. I don’t want to add up how many still to make, as I don’t want to be depressed. I also will need to start planning more carefully over the next few weeks as I am not at all interested in following the trimming diagram above and cutting many of my rosettes in half. I can’t see the point in doing so much work only to slice it off!

If you’ve missed any of my previous updates, you can find them all HERE.

Thanks Archie! I’m really trying hard to work out how I can make this without the uneven edges and wasted work, or as some people have done, applique the entire top down with no trimming at all. Hoping I can find a happy medium somewhere. Thanks so much for visiting πŸ™‚

Thanks Jess! Now I just have to work out how to store them – the Grand Piano is getting more use as a Rosette holder than an instrument I’m afraid lol…. πŸ˜‰

    Hi there Cassie
My name is Jo, I have been trying to find help to make this amazing quilt. Turns out its very hard.
I have noticed that this post on Pinterest is from 2016, so im hoping you check here occassionally.
Where do i find a pattern or instructions for making the rosette’s. I have tried everywhere. It only seems to be available from the states or england, both which makes it very exspensive. I’m in australia.
Is there a electronic version anywhere in the world.
I have fingers crossed, as I am making rosttes off pictures, but think that might get harder as I go along.
    Many thanks for any hepl
