May is for Makers – Part 2

I wanted to share with you another pair of purchases towards the May is for Makers initiative to support independent designers, previously blogged about HERE. (Yes, I know it’s June now, but I bought them last month!) I wanted to spread the “making” love around, so I have picked a couple of very different interpretations of maker for you.

Swoon Patterns Stella Weekender

From the talented bag designer Alicia, who is the genius behind Swoon Sewing Patterns comes the Stella Weekender. I have high hopes of making this one up in time for an upcoming quilt convention, the AMQF in Adelaide, but with 2 months left, I better get my skates on!

For a change of pace, the next purchase isn’t a pattern although it matches a pattern that I had purchased some months ago.

The Steam Punk pattern, based off the traditional block, the Airship Propellor, is written and published by Jen Kingwell.

I have really been looking forward to making this quilt – hoping to use up many odd scraps that I have to make it a “memory” quilt for all the fabrics, blocks and quilts that have passed through my hands through the last couple of years.

My templates were purchased from a small acrylic ruler cutting service here in Australia, Sunset Seams. Their service is second to none, you can have your name or initials engraved on your rulers (useful especially for classes or retreats), and even an option to add a hole for hanging or putting them all together on a ring to keep them safe. This particular design is offered in two sizes, for a 9″ or 12″ finished block. To be able to best use all my scraps, I elected to purchase the 9″ version.

You can find Sunset Seams HERE, where they sell a selection of templates to match current patterns (including La Passacaglia in the original or larger sizes). Because each set is made specifically to order, you can choose the colour of your acrylic from their selection of 5, and also, your seam allowance width. I personally prefer my English Paper Piecing to have a 3/8″ seam, although for machine piecing a 1/4″ seam is the standard.

If all that choice wasn’t enough, you can even order specific templates made to your own block design. It makes me want to create some quilts, just to have my own unique templates!

Stay tuned, as I am looking forward to sharing some more independent artists and designers with you as the year moves on. If you know of an undiscovered treasure that you would like to share with us, shout it out in the comments!

I’m off to have a look at the template company. So many practical options offered, thanks for highlighting them.
