I have been lucky enough to play with some of the new release Riley Blake Designs fabric lately – Sue Daley’s range, Bittersweet, sings to my 70’s wild child heart. The funky patterns and sheer variety Sue included mean that it’s a modern quilters dream.
Best part is, the scale of the patterns will let you use even the tiniest of scraps! How tiny you might ask?

I am such a sucker for a good paisley, not to mention the stripes are really versatile too with how thin they are.
I have a larger project on the go with these fabrics, but I can’t show it to you yet! I had a bowl full of tiny triangle off cuts which I absolutely hated to waste, so I went looking for the perfect pattern to showcase them. Enter the FREE “No Y-Seam Feathered Star” from Threaded Quilting. Yep, you read it right. This amazing foundation paper piecing pattern comes in several sizes (8″, 12″ and 16″), and is FREE!
To give you a sense of scale, this block is actually the 16″ version. It will make a lovely cushion to go with my secret project once it’s finished. And meanwhile, I got to use up some of those tiny pieces instead of wasting them.
So, is this pattern for the first time quilter? No, probably not. I would estimate the skill needed to get a clean result like this would be at least an intermediate experience in Foundation Paper Piecing. This is also not the pattern to whip up in a couple of hours, there are well over 100 individual fiddly little pieces of fabric in this. Jessie, the genius behind Threaded Quilting Studio has written and published a brilliant pattern. After all my experience with paper piecing I only made a couple of simple alterations to it. One of my favourite features as always was the cutting list – accurate numbers and sizes for each part are included, although the table they are presented on took a bit of navigating for me the first time.
