Quilt basting, Band performing, Barbequeing, Cheering…..

Wow…. the last few days have had it all!

Thursday afternoon, I spent just over an hour basting my new quilt. I had mad dreams of getting it quilted in there somewhere, but life was against me and that’s still waiting….

Here’s the finished top laid out on the batting to help me trim it down to size. I’ve strayed from my true bamboo batting love, I’m trying the Mini Jumbuck 60% Australian Wool batting to give a bit more Autumn weight. It’s still amazingly thin and light though. Because I wanted to buy the width of my quilt, options being 1.5m (too narrow), and 2.1m, too wide, but I can use the excess, as you can see, it came with a rather gnarly fold crease across the middle of the photo. It took a few minutes of pressing to get that out. The care tag said I could press it on the wrong side on low, but I have news for those people – they didn’t mark the wrong side!! and that crease was never coming out on low. Never mind, out with a trusty pressing cloth, crank up the iron, and lo and behold, no more crease!

Here’s my pieced backing, put together during the bits and pieces last week were I had some energy to sit at the sewing machine. A seam here, a piece there, and it was soon finished. Yes, I did give it a good press before I basted it, it looks pretty awful here!

Now all basted, I just need to get some energy together to quilt it! I’m planning on just simple straight lines – varying distances perhaps, with fairly dense quilting. I can’t wait to try out the new sewing machine with the extension table for quilting, I’m hoping it will make a real difference!

So, on to the performing! Friday night, DS2, had a performance at the most gorgeous outdoor location, Deviation Road Winery, for a fundraiser for their Swing Band to attend Generations in Jazz next month in Mount Gambier. It’s their first year attending, although they hope to make it a regular thing, but it’s a huge undertaking for the kids and teachers involved, and everyone is very excited!

The performers, the music, the venue, the evening, was just everything of the highest calibre. What a spectacular evening!! Which was just as well because organising our families day to get there in the end entailed so much running around that I have spent the entire weekend fighting a migraine as a result. I’m hoping that the worst is over now, but I will be taking things very quietly this week to make sure I don’t trigger a relapse.

Because the kids are busy fundraising for their big trip, they will be having a sausage sizzle, and so DS2 decided that he needed to learn how to barbeque…. Now, I’m sure you know that the Aussie barbeque is something of an art form. In my family it was raised to the levels of Da Vinci and Botticelli. My father took his BBQ very VERY seriously. He was always in search of the perfect amount of black on his steak, or of crunch in the onion rings…. he would go out onto the street to make sure that the whole neighbourhood could smell his BBQ and be jealous. This man knew how to BBQ.

I’m grateful that my DH has entered fully into the spirit of it, and we have enjoyed many a fine Aussie Barbie over the last few months on our new deck in our lovely house. So, when the time came, he took his teaching duties seriously. I guess only time will tell how much of the information DS took in…..

And finally, as if we hadn’t had a big enough, busy enough weekend, we had dinner with friends on Saturday night as well, DH scored some free tickets through work on Friday, so Sunday late afternoon found he and DS2 down at Hindmarsh Stadium watching some of this….

Which was the Hyundai A-League game Play-off between Adelaide United Reds and the Brisbane Roar!! Of course, we were hoping to see a bit of this sort of action……

But it ended up being won by Brisbane 2-1. At least all 3 goals were scored down this end, so the boys got to see a lot of the game, and DS2 was just over the MOON because although he is just a huge soccer fan and a walking soccer encyclopaedia  he has never been to see a big match live!! It was really great he got this chance and he and his Dad had a great night!

So there you go – that’s a recap from Thursday through to Sunday night. Admittedly, it’s not normally quite so crazy around here, but I think that’s definitely busy enough!!
