Simply Retro challenge – March finish!

posted in: Quilting, sewing | 5

So excited that I managed to get this quilt top cut, pieced and put together in a month. I will get around to quilting it, but haven’t gotten a backing fabric for it yet, so that will have to wait a little longer.

See original post HERE for more information about the challenge, and as always, there is an open invitation to join in anytime!

My final layout, without the sashing is just so vibrant. I love the contrast of the prints against each other, and then again against the different solid fabrics. Each one provides it’s own interest.

I enjoyed being able to show off Mo Bedell’s fabulous Full Moon Lagoon prints, and tried to make the most of the variety in this colourway.

Another feature of this pattern is the secondary diamond shapes made where the blocks meet…. although as you can see from the seam lines, not all of my blocks were created equal I’m afraid.

For future quilt blocks, I will definitely size up and trim down my flying geese units, because no matter how I stitched or pressed them, they were always a little small in one section. It was quite frustrating by the end, but I pushed through. And I managed to join up all my block corners, and lost hardly any triangle points in the process. I think this quilt will look even more spectacular when it is quilted up, and the seam lines inside each solid colour will lose their prominence.

Just in time for a new month, which will be featuring the Playground pattern. Fabric is all picked out, and I will be back to reveal it next week!

I love this interpretation of the pattern so much. I love the colours and the fabric choices. I love that you went with a mixed colour background. It’s just fabulous!
