Kids project – Simple Star Cushion

posted in: Home decor, Pets, Quilting, sewing, Tutorial | 4

For the school holidays we wanted to make a simple patchwork project. The fabric and design was selected by DS2, I helped with the rotary cutting and trimming of the blocks, and did the quilting. We are so happy with how it turned out, as were the puppies!!

The cushion was a simple 18″ square. We cut 4 background squares to 5″, 4 background squares to 5 1/2″ and 4 each of fabrics A and B to 5 1/2″ squares also. Pairing 2 A with 2 B fabrics, and 2 each of the A and B to the background (blue) squares produced 12 Half-square triangles trimmed down to 5″ each.

By careful laying out DS2 was even able to keep the lines of water in Fabric A running the same way on each “diamond”.

The quilting was a mixture of straight lines, echoing the shape of the star repeatedly, and then a very loose free-motion quilting to imitate running water over the blue sections. I love the texture and movement the closely spaced echo quilting created on the star.

Such a pair of posers these puppies are!!

Backed with a piece of cotton gingham originally purchased in a scrap pack from the op-shop, made into a very simple envelope closure and the whole project was finished!! I’m also calling this a win for #nobuyjuly because the fabric was bought for DS2 quite a few weeks ago, and the backing fabric has been in my stash for months and months. Even the cushion insert was recycled from the lounge room, rescued from a cover that we no longer liked. So it was a school holiday win all around!

Those puppies are sooo cute (I am a dog person) they almost distract from the awesome texture of the cushion…love LOVE that quilting
