Sewing some vintage tops

Part of my secret sewing projects have included a swap with my lovely friend, Lisa. Now she has gotten her package, I can share it all with you.

Firstly, her Bee block. She is making a Trellis Crossroads quilt, same as I am. I loved making this one, it’s got such cheerful fabrics in it.

I also included this teeny tiny pieced “mug rug” or coaster. It’s 6″ square, each of the Half-Square Triangles finished at 1″. It was made using the left-over triangles from my Grant Park quilt, as well as a few pieces of the binding fabric. I quilted it with a tiny stipple, or meander, then bound it. I just love this sort of quilting in miniature!
Edited-1408 Edited-1409Of course, I had to include something for her totally gorgeous daughter, Ayla. So I went rummaging through my fabric stash and whipped up these two totally adorable tops, using a mixture of bought and vintage fabrics. I love working with these vintage fabrics. They are well washed and soft, but so durable and should stand up to lots of fun and washing for years to come. I sized them up a little bit, so hopefully they fit for Summer to come, but could still be worn now with a t-shirt or skivvy underneath.

First up is this absolutely adorable peasant top, using vintage striped fabric and a cute floral that perfectly matched the orange and pink. I left this one simple and no fuss, perfect for easy wear and play. It’s cut a little shorter than usual because the fabric wasn’t as wide as the pattern, which means it will be super cute over jeans or a little skirt.

Edited-1640 Edited-1641Secondly is a clever cross-over back reversible top, with strawberry fabric on one side, and vintage stripe fabric on the other, with just a hit of strawberries on the shoulders.

Edited-1642 Edited-1643 Edited-1644 Edited-1645The easy on and off construction of this top means it’s super practical and easy to wear, with no buttons or snaps to fiddle with. Pattern is from Whimsy Couture on Etsy.

I really love making little tops like this, if you would like to order one for your child or as a present please feel free to contact me!

Just you wait, one of these days there may be a grand baby girl, and I’ll definitely be ordering one of those from you. Your sewing is exquisite. As for the sewing project how long did it take you to pick those colours. They are like matches made in heaven, all so different but all perfect for that vintage feel. Don’t tell me you just dived your hand into your box of material and used whatever came out, a la lucky dip. Surely not?

Oh dear. I didn’t need much work to pick them out, I find myself drawn to things that thankfully work well together! I would absolutely love to make one for your grandbaby girl, when she arrives 🙂
