November quilting book review

With all honesty, today’s review is of a book that I wasn’t sure would appeal to me. However, I have a precarious tower of Jelly Rolls, and an ever increasing mountain of scraps. This means I have had to start looking for strip specific patterns. Enter Scrap-Basket Sensations by Kim Brackett.

A fabulous feature of this book is the fabric requirements – it is written for both strips and scraps, so you have simple cutting instructions for both.

Immediately on my must make list are the cover quilt “Picnic”, and this glorious one “Over and Under”, which shows off beautiful prints and gives plenty of scope for negative space quilting at the same time. I love the woven lattice effect it creates.

Edited-2108I have previously confessed, one thing I struggle with is visualising how patterns – either quilt or dress, could look in a different fabric or colour. This book has been no exception to the rule. On flipping through I did find it hard to look through the dull colours and see the pattern underneath.

Edited-2112 Edited-2113If you are looking for patterns to use up strips and jelly rolls, these style of books are worth checking out. However, be prepared for needing to use a bit of imagination in the process. So, will I buy it? I’m not sure. I will always have a jelly roll that needs a good pattern, but whether I’d use enough of these patterns? It’s hard to say.

Have you ever made a quilt using a pattern that you just didn’t love in the book? Did it work out?

Cindy, thankyou for your endorsement of this book! I’d love to see a more modern reprint, although I guess quilter pattern writers need to make sure their published books appeal to a wide variety of quilters. I forget that modern isn’t always everyone’s cup of tea! 🙂 Don’t you just love a well written pattern.
