I am so happy to have yet another finish under my belt for this quarter. I kept this quilt on the quiet because it was a (somewhat belated) gift for DH’s new niece, however now that they have received it I am free to share it with the universe!!
Of course, all quilts start somewhat like this – on the design wall being laid out for balance and colour. I used Kona Shadow which turned out to be an almost perfect match for these Tula Pink Bumble prints.
The design is a simplified version of a pattern from John Q. Adams book, Beyond Neutral. In that pattern, he uses horizontal sashing as well as vertical sashing to break the blocks up into pairs. I liked the look of columns though, and then added a simple large border of grey on the top and bottom of the pieced panel.
This quilt then went into the scared wip pile. Don’t we all have one of those? I wanted to back it with this incredible coral coloured minky, however it wasn’t something I’d ever tried before. So, because that step was intimidating the pants off me, it sat, complete with back and binding, in a bag for a few months. Having my longarm though made me brave enough to try quilting it, and it turned out better than I could have imagined!
The quilt then moved from the scared pile to the finishing pile – here is my 2015 3rd quarter finish-along pile – you can just see it peeking out just below the upper right corner of the photo.
Binding complete, it was photo time! I just love how the minky shows up the quilting texture, but is still so soft an luxurious to cuddle with at the same time. Binding fabric was a print from Bonnie & Camille’s Vintage Modern line – just the perfect shades of pink and coral! Digital Edge2Edge pattern, chosen by DH, was Lorien’s Frolic purchased from Digi-tech Designs.
The label was written and attached, it was wrapped up in ribbon and paper and popped in the post for delivery last week. It bears repeating if you have a pile of quilt tops waiting in the cupboard, especial if they are “scared WIP’S”, done is just the best feeling. Done and gifted? It’s awesome.

Gorgeous quilt Cassie
What’s holding me back? Time, and not sure how to quilt something sometimes Probably needing advice and that bit of courage

It is such a gorgeous quilt! The monkey has fabulous texture!
Not having a longarm is holding me back 😉 seriously though, quilting scares me because it can make or break the quilt.

Love those soft colors–and I am sure the minkie feels wonderful. I have used it as backing and survived the quilting, but oh the shredding and lint!

I need to conquer FMQing, I had hoped to dedicate the second half of this year to it but when the Elna died I had to take the Janome off the frame so that I could sew. Hopefully next year I can practice and slowly finish off some quilts.

Thanks for the visit Archie! Yes, I have heard back from them that they are rapt in it, so a job well done!

[…] is looking familiar, it’s because I used the same pantograph and the same minky backing for my own Tula Pink baby quilt project. It’s just the perfect pattern for a baby quilt, dense, with hearts and flowers but not so […]
