Cassie’s La Passacaglia – second update

Another three weeks has flown by, but I have a little less progress to show you this time. I finally decided it was time to commit to making my first large rosette, and so I have been slower to work (all those pentagons!) and also deliberated more over my fabric choices.

This rosette is oh-so-close to completion, needing a few outer stars which are nearly put together but not yet attached. It has been a glorious romp through my fabric collection, working in hues of aqua and chartreuse.

I started with the centre of echinacea flowers from my favourite of Anna Maria Horner’s line, Pretty Potent. They can be fussy cut a hundred different ways and look different every time! I loved the starfish like effect I was able to achieve with the centre petals. The next row was actually very challenging, as I ended up needing the creamy beige and black from Comma instead of a black and white neutral. Following that on with aqua Cotton & Steel was easy, and my charcoal stars with fussy cut mosaic tiles and some more scraps of Pretty Potent formed the next ring.

There are many different ways to approach the large pentagon border, the pattern has it completed as two distinct rows of colour, however I saw this flower petal version on Instagram and had to give it a try. The herringbone Cloud 9 print was just the perfect match to the yellowgreens already through the colour choices, and then again, Cotton & Steel to the rescue with the tiny flowers. The dark stripe centres were fussy cut from a very old Lizzy House fabric line, 1001 Peeps, and the I had a lot of trouble deciding the tiny diamonds in between the flowers. I wanted to choose something that worked with my fabrics but didn’t seem part of them, so that each flower would appear distinct and not linked together.

I am over the moon with how this huge rosette has come together, and I really do mean huge. I had no idea it would grow to be this big from all the small individual parts. After I have finished adding on the last few stars, it will be time to have a play with some more colours and fabric combinations and complete some smaller cogs.

As a reminder, here is where my previous update ended….

I love your blog. I have been searching for a way to print the entire layout. I have the book. I want to begin putting my first rosettes together and thought that would help.
    Thank you!
