Project 48 quilt progress

I am playing along with another long-term quilt-along project – the Project 48 quilt being hosted by two lovely Australian quilt bloggers, Linden and Crystal.

I am also excited to be one of the contributors to this project, with my block coming up next month.

There have been 14 blocks released so far from Crystal, Linden and various other guest contributors. The blocks are generously sized at 9 1/2″ square, and each month follows a basic theme, so far including, 9-patch, Half Square Triangle and Cross blocks. The designs are a mixture of modern and traditional, with straightforward piecing instructions and photographs to help you put them together. I have been able to whip up one or two in a session without breaking a sewist’s sweat, and have currently finished nine.

I’ve been fortunate to have the chance to play with some advance fabric from the Riley Blake designer, Nadra Ridgeway of Ellis & Higgs. Nadra’s “Backyard Roses” fabric is just delightful, with a fresh spring palette and a good variety of sizes in the floral prints. Using these, a selection of solids, and working in my other Riley Blake stash has been a fun challenge.

Other block designers include Keera Job of Live Love Sew (with the flying geese block, top right above) and Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts (the fun half square triangle block bottom right).

I messed up the measurements for the block above, so I made my own variation. I think this is one of my favourite blocks so far, which is a happy accident. It can be frustrating to make a mistake when quilting, but it really helps to think of it as a design opportunity than ruining your day’s fun.

I really love how these two prints work so beautifully together – the bikes are from a much older Riley Blake line, “Fancy Free” and the flowers are from “Backyard Roses”, although to look at them next to each other, you would think they were designed at the same time!

This quilt is turning out to be sweeter than lollies! I can’t wait to see it grow as the months go by. Hop on over to the Project 48 website if you would like to join in the fun.

 Happy Crafting - Cassie.
