Pezzy quilt for Jett – 2016 Finish

I can’t believe that I finally get to share another finish with you! I have so many projects on the go, in the pipeline and everywhere in between, a finish is a bit of a miracle at the moment. But here it is, a quilt that I originally started 2 years ago (April 2014) and now it is finally crossed off my finish list – bound, washed, labelled and gifted to a very precious little boy, Jett.

The pattern is Playground, from Camille Roskelley’s book, Simply Retro. The top, which as I mentioned was completed 2 years ago, made using the American Jane Pezzy line of fabric prints. The whole thing has a fun, boyish vibe and colour scheme – no pink allowed!

I chose to finish it off with a custom quilting design, using curved rulers and lines to accent the ring shapes, and then a medium range stipple to fill in all the background areas, allowing each of the rings to pop up in contrast. The quilting was executed with 2 colours of thread – a mid grey in the background and an off-white for the circular designs. These choices allowed the lines and the texture of the quilting to stand out instead of the actual stitching.

You can get a bit of a better look at the quilting from the back here, with each ring showing up as significantly less quilted than the denser fill around them.

The label is a vital part of the finishing process, especially as this quilt starts a new life with a special owner. Given that his big sister already has her own closely cherished quilt, I look forward to seeing this one loved for many years to come.

I forgot what a great feeling a finished project is. Although I am often seduced by the thrill of starting fresh quilts, pulling fabrics and playing with colour and design, the satisfaction of seeing a pair of eyes light up and two arms start to hug and drag around their new quilt proudly – that’s an awesome feeling.
