Summer Rain Hexagon Quilt – Completed

I am so over the top happy to finally be able to share with you the pictures of my finished Summer Rain hexagon quilt. This mammoth English Paper Piecing project took 54 weeks of handstitching, then I needed a few months to add the twin borders, quilt and bind. Are you ready for a colour explosion?

I used double batting to achieve the amazing puffy texture you can see in these pictures, and I can assure you this quilt weighs a ton! The quilting design of raindrops was chosen specifically to go with the “story” of this quilt.

The bright scrappy nature of this design, mixed with the random “drips” of white hexagons give the feeling of looking out at the wonderful colours of summer through a rain-soaked window. The drops obscure and blur what you can see into a bright whirl of colour that doesn’t show you what is really outside. I used a solid colour inner border in two colours, and a thick border of a floral print which is actually includes tiny hexagons to bring the colours together.

A much calmer and simpler floral for the back, and I used the hexagon floral print for the binding as well to avoid adding any more layers of colour or pattern. Of course, I quilted this myself on my HandiQuilter Avante using a computerised pantograph.

This is not a small quilt, easily covering our queen size bed. For reference, the hexagons are 1″ and all of them are handsewn.

Best of all, this quilt received a Commended ribbon in the 2016 Royal Adelaide Show, which finished last week. Now it will stay on my bed and I can enjoy the work that went into it every time I look at it!

Congratulations on the award! Some of your ‘in progress’ shots inspired me to try doing hexies. I’m so delighted to see your finished project, it is lovely. There really is something extra satisfying about curling up under a quilt you made yourself, isnt there?
