Ice Cream Soda – I’m seeing stars!

Who doesn’t love Ice Cream. I mean, what’s not to love about some frozen goodness? What on earth does this have to do with quilting you ask? Ice Cream Soda is an English Paper Piecing pattern from the genius that is Jodi from Tales of Cloth. A quilt maker extraordinaire, she has extended her vision to designing and manufacturing her own patterns as well as pieces for other well know EPP patterns.  She offered this project at the start of the year in monthly installments, and of course, I’m already a couple of months behind. However, these blocks are gorgeous and so quick to stitch up that I’ll catch up in no time.

You might notice something about these 16 blocks – they are all following a very specific recipe. Can you guess the rules?

All of the blocks contain three fabrics, all in shades of blue – including my favourite teals and sea-glass colours. All blocks consist of 3 rings – the inner and outer rings must be of a lower contrast than the centre star. The intention is to make that star really pop out of the design.

You can get a better idea of the theory in a black and white picture which takes the colour out of the image and shows only the contrast and tones. Not all of these are as strong as I would like, but I am working with the fabrics that I have in my stash.

Coming from the Fussy cutting queen, this may surprise you but fussy cutting is optional for this quilt. I have so many EPP on the go now, I really wanted this one to be laid back and so I gave myself permission to just let the obsession go for this one. It feels good!! Of course, I couldn’t resist the hedgehogs or other simple features. I’m a recovering addict!

Have you made a quilt with a restricted palette or other rules? Did you find it difficult or did it free up your creativity?

Absolutely lovely! I thought I recognized the hedgehogs 😆

I have just started this project, and have to admit, I am finding it hard to fussy cut – so much fabric wastage. The results are worth it though. I will have to try the black and white photo when I have made a few more. Yours is so calm and restful.
