Project 48 Quilt update

Although I might be a bit behind on the blogging, I am definitely still sewing, in between quilting jobs. Here are my most recent Project 48 Quilt blocks, including a couple that belong to the 2016 quilt that I hadn’t finished last year.

I have been enjoying using my vast collection of Riley Blake fabrics for this quilt – including prints left over from my All Over the Octagon EPP quilt, as well as the bundles of Backyard Roses by Nadra Ridgeway (Ellis & Higgs) and Bittersweet by Sue Daley generously provided by Millhouse Collections the Australian wholesaler of Riley Blake Designs fabric.

I have certainly enjoyed to opportunity this quilt project presents to have fun with blocks and to explore new techniques. Each designer brings their own style and methods to the quilt, so there has been plenty of variety.

For the flower block in the top left corner, I actually used Lori Holt’s technique of interfacing to turn the petal shapes out and keep the raw edges underneath. It was a first for me and I really found it easy to do! The heart above (bottom left) and the circle below were both stitched using a full white fabric block underneath, which, when turned out, gives you a neat opening for your applique piece. This technique was taught by a fabulous Australian quilter, Ms Midge. Of course I couldn’t resist the opportunities for some fussy cutting!

I often spend more time playing with fabric and selecting what to use for each block than I do making the actual block! I couldn’t resist making this beautiful sunrise block, which was to easy with mini dresdens and a 1/4 circle.

If you missed out last year, or want to join in this year, it’s not too late to purchase the patterns! Get all the details HERE at Project48quilt.com

How do you stay motivated over a long quilt-a-long like this? Do you get burned out or lose interest quickly?
