Budget ideas and Op-shop scores!

It seems that money is on a lot of people’s minds at the moment. Rhonda posted a very thoughtful blog post, asking if “The frugal economy is the new normal?” I have read an interesting article on the news website about Luxury Lifestyles. We have the Young House Love post on budgets and saving money, Skip It. All great places to start if you are hunting for ways to cut down on your expenses or make more happen with less.

A tip I would like to share is to check for discount opportunities with various companies. We receive a free discount “book” through DH’s work every year. This gives us better prices on things like dinners and entertainment, however we discovered it also covered things like a 20% off discount on a particular men’s clothing shop. Using this we saved about $30 in one hit, on business shirts that were already on sale. Again, when DH took DS1 to the movies last week, we discovered that as a Telstra customer, he was entitled to pre-purchase his movie tickets at a heavy discount – $10 instead of $19. No-one had ever told us about this offer, it was up to us to find it. We also have another discount membership through our Insurance company, so these types of loyalty offers are worth keeping an eye on. If you use them cleverly, they can save you a fortune!

Yesterday I gave in to temptation and visited our local community Op Shop. It’s an adorable poky little place, and very much for treasure hunting. As it happened, they have started their end of season 50% off sale, so I popped in at the right time.

I scored in several sections of the shop before I ran out of money…

Pyrex mug, 3 Johnson saucers and 2 more modern Staffordshire saucers. All in excellent condition.

Set of 3 crochet/lace coathangers, and 3 awesome vintage ties for DS1's collection.

I did also score one more tie, for DS2, but it needed a bit more washing than the others so it missed the photo shoot. But I will definitely share it with you, it’s just won me mother of the year. Possibly of the decade!

And the grand total for this haul of loot? $6.00. I kid you not. The best part was probably the jacket which I actually spotted a few weeks ago and kicked myself for not going back when I had some money. I was sure that someone would snap that baby up. I couldn’t believe it when it was still on the rack, AND was now half price!!

So, have you had any amazing shopping scores lately? Particular on your vintage, because we all love a good thrift shop bargain!Happy Crafting - Cassie.
