You are going to love this bright and fun quilt that I have to share with you today – and it’s one of the few that I’ve managed to finish for us to keep this year, which means I get to watch my younger son enjoy it every day!
You may remember this gorgeous stack of fabric – obtained especially for him as he is seriously addicted to all things pineapple! Fabric is from Riley Blake Designs “Fresh Market” by Bella Blvd.
Here is the finished product – on a queen sized bed for scale. Using a fat quarter bundle, along with a some matching solids and a couple of metres of yellow for the border, it is a generous size for snuggling in.
The main hexagons were cut using my Sizzix half-hexagon die, which meant for a really quick and painless process – even taking in to account the various prints that were directional. I was able to machine stitch all of them into rows, then piece the quilt in only a couple of sessions.
Backed in a plush aqua coloured minky, with a layer of 80/20 cotton/polyester batting as well, the depth and texture that the pineapple based quilting design gives is incredible. Everyone that has seen this quilt wants to touch and snuggle with it.
To add interest to the wide solid borders, I appliqued two English Paper Pieced hexagon flowers on the top and three on the bottom border, using a machine blanket stitch to attach them. Machine quilting over the top means that they are completely secure and I just love the pop that they give on the bright yellow. Of course those borders are also the ideal place to show off the quilting design. Binding is an orange stripe from Riley Blake Designs “Backyard Roses” by Nadra Ridgeway.
You can get Fresh Market through your local Riley Blake Designs stockist – check Riley Blake’s website, or Millhouse Collections in Australia for further information. You can see some more examples of my machine quilting through my Juicy Quilting website.
