Aussie Modern Instabee for March

Do you hear that buzzing sound? Don’t adjust your computer, it’s just the happy buzz of sewing machines across Australia. I have joined in with my very first quilting bee. Run a little differently to normal ones, because that’s how we Aussie’s roll. Each month you are designated a partner to sew a quilt block for, to her plan/design.

We are working out of this book… Modern bee

and each person has selected a block, with a theme or design, for the others to make. Normally each person gets a month to themselves, so everyone makes for me this month, and everyone makes for Jane next month etc, but our amazing organiser, and busy bee in her own right, Lisa has arranged it so that we swap around each month, and so you get one block per month for a year, instead of 12 blocks in 1 month. Clear as mud? To make it even more confusing, the person I am sewing for, and the person I am getting a block from in the same month are different!

Here is my chosen block….

The design is called “Trellis” and is trickier to sew than it looks thanks to all the intersecting seams. Press, starch and press some more!! I have asked for this block to be made in a single colourway and a white background, with the intention of making a rainbow of them by the end of the year. I think it will look great when it’s finished!

Here is the block for my partner for March. She selected the same block, with the same idea, however she wanted her rainbow IN the block…. with each side arranged in spectrum order, and low volume prints for the background instead of plain white.

I sent it off a week ago, I do hope she likes it. It’s daunting making something to go in someone else’s quilt project, but very exciting too….

Finally, here is the first block I received from Alison, who chose a fabulous green colour selection for my quilt. I love how she included greens from quite a sage base, all the way though to the more vibrant minty green… and the little bee who just peeked in over the seam is adorable. Thanks again Alison!!

So that’s March done and dusted, now we are straight into April! Can’t wait to see what everyone does this month.Happy Crafting - Cassie.
