Arabian Garden – Finished Quilt

The quilt finishes that I still haven’t shared with you all just keep on coming!! This beauty is another one from my favourite style, curved quilts. The pattern is from one of my go to books, A Quilter’s Mixology by Angela Pingel. I reviewed this book back in June 2015, and loved it so much I bought my own copy.

These amazing vibrant floral prints are from a layer cake, Fresh Cut by Basic Grey – the are really fun with the different shapes and rich flowers. I was glad to score some yardage to make a large border and also bind the quilt. Sometimes you want a lap quilt, otherwise, it’s nice to have one that will be a generous single size or to give as a gift.

The centre blocks are made from a peachy pink which pulled from the colours of the quilt without being ridiculously girly. This fabric has some beautiful aqua, rust and charcoal prints and it is so much more versatile than the average floral collection.

I quilted it with an all-over design, loose leaves and open flowers, to keep the quilting even and not dominating over all those coloured centre blocks.

One tip that I would strongly recommend when making a quilt like this that uses a basic square block format, is to brush up on your “Spinning Seams” technique, detailed in this tutorial HERE. It really helped to make this a lovely flat and smooth quilt top, and helped to keep the seam allowances in check. You can see it in action in this picture I snapped while the quilt top was loaded onto my longarm frame.

Finally, the binding is this absolutely delightful tiny floral in the charcoal colourway – you can see how well it balances the larger floral border in this picture I snapped midway through sewing it on the front. Of course, being a hand sewing obsessive, I stitched down the binding to the back of the quilt by hand. I’m so happy with the finished product and love to snuggle on the lounge with it!

So tell me, have you tried curved piecing? What did you enjoy about it, or what did you find most challenging?

I haven’t done anything curved but I’m getting ready to try a New York Beauty. Foundation Paper Piecing, the only way I’m doing curves…

Oh yes, a New York Beauty!! I have a book of them that I’m dying to try – you know, in all my spare time! My only objection is that this book has no CD with the patterns, so I will somehow need to photocopy them, not always easy to do with a book. Share with me your progress, I’d love to see!

Just found your blog because of plus quilts. I hope your life is O>K> as you have not posted for several months now. I wish you well and Happy Stitching!

Melody, thank you so much for your kind words! I have limited access to my computer and have been focusing my work more on my Etsy shop making bags and wallets. It seems never enough hours in my day! I have more quilts that I need to share, thanks for the nudge 🙂
